Darsham Old Hall

Darsham Old Hall is home to East Suffolk’s first biodiversity net gain habitat bank, which features a complex mosaic of habitat restoration and enhancement. Sited on what was once intensively farmed arable land, its BNG units were created from 2023 in a programme of rewilding, hedge and tree planting, watercourse ‘re-wiggling’, the creation of lakes and the planting of 1,000 nut trees in a traditional orchard.

The land’s renewed ability to hold water has massively increased the wildlife visiting the site, which has also introduced a wide variety of indigenous seeds. Significant new habitat has been created by adding one mile of hedging and 3,000 native trees, and letting other areas go to scrub. Three longhorn cattle introduced to the site are busy opening up dense tracts of woodland to natural light, improving soil fauna, spreading seeds and contributing to biodiversity. The quality of water leaving the site has also improved, along with soil health and retention.
